The company comprises several key departments: Wireless Technology Department (WT), Standardization Technology Department (ST), Solution Department (SL) , AI Technology Department (AI), Platform Development Department (PFD), and Administrative Department (ADM). The six departments work together to compose movements in our symphonies of innovation.

  • WT

    The Wireless Technology Department is committed to cutting-edge research in wireless technologies. Its mission is to promote wireless technology innovations, so as to develop core technologies for sustainable growth of the mobile communications industry.
    As 5G mobile communications systems have been commercially used globally, the Wireless Technology Department is conducting research on the next-generation 6G mobile communications systems. This will maintain DOCOMO’s global leadership position in the ICT field. 6G will provide significantly better performance compared to 5G. It will result in the deep integration of the cyber and physical worlds, and promote the sustainable development of society.
    The Wireless Technology Department is conducting research on key wireless technologies to achieve extreme performance of 6G, including new waveform and modulation, extreme massive multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO), integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), and integrated terrestrial and non-terrestrial communication.
    At the same time, the Wireless Technology Department actively participates in domestic 6G technology seminars, including IMT-2030 Promotion Group, CCSA New Wireless Technologies Working Group, and FuTURE Mobile Communications Forum. This will help promote exchanges between China and Japan in new wireless technologies.

  • ST

    The Standardization Technology Department has been deeply engaged in the field of 3GPP standardization for many years, with rich technical accumulation and brilliant achievements from 4G LTE to 5G NR. Our standardization team participated in and contributed to the standardization meeting for the first time in 2006 and continues to grow in the following years. We have been more deeply involved in the standardization work of 3GPP RAN1 and provided large number of contributions since LTE Release 10.
    By making overall arrangements for 5G NR in advance, we made outstanding contributions to the successful completion of 5G Release15/16 standardization, and established DOCOMO's leading position in the operator echelon. In the research of 5G NR, our team has participated in the standardization of topics including mmWave, NR MIMO, URLLC/IIoT, IAB, channel coding, scheduling and control, flexible duplex, NOMA, cellular V2X, UAV, and so on. Towards the challenge of 5G-Advanced and 6G, we are actively working to standardize and define the specification impact of the technologies for important scenarios from the perspectives of 5G evolution and future requirements.
    The Standardization Technology Department has been committed to promoting technologies and ideas which are beneficial to networks and users into international standards and building a good ecosystem for future mobile communications. At the same time, we actively support the development and experiment of the commercial networks at DOCOMO. We have more than 2,000 international patent applications and hundreds of standard-essential patents (SEPs).

  • SL

    The Solution Department focuses on the research and standardization of integrated wireless communication and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Our target is to enhance wireless transmission efficiency through the adoption of AI technologies, thereby effectively reducing the investment and operational costs for operators. Our main research areas encompass the validation and standardization of 5G/6G system together with AI technologies, dedicated to driving innovation and progress in these fields.
    Currently, the Solution Department is actively involved in the standardization for AI for Air Interface in 5G Advanced (Release18/19) system. Through in-depth technical research and experimental validation, we ensure the feasibility and benefits of new technologies. Our efforts not only advance communication technology but also provide operators with more cost-effective solutions.
    Looking forward, we will continue to explore the integration of 6G systems and AI, uncovering the potential of AI in future wireless communication systems. Through continuous technological innovation and international collaboration, we aim to contribute to the realization of more efficient and intelligent wireless communication networks.

  • AI

    The AI Technology Department is dedicated to the research and innovation of generation technology (AIGC technology) and its applications related to new business innovations. By leveraging advanced generative technologies such as diffusion models and flow-based generative models, we support new business opportunities and commercial models. Our current work is focused on four levels: theory, technology, platform, and application, with innovative research in areas such as deep learning training data synthesis, anomaly detection and prediction in wireless communication networks, and semantic communication. We aim to achieve groundbreaking innovations in the fundamental theories and key technologies of AI, actively promote the integration of AI technology with wireless communication networks, and enable computers to better benefit humanity.

  • PFD

    The Platform Development Department is dedicated to the development of simulation platforms for 3GPP standardization, key technology research for future wireless communications, and performance optimization of commercial wireless network. Through high-accuracy, high-efficiency, and high-reliability system-level and link-level simulation platforms, we provide one-stop services for performance evaluation of advanced technologies, standardization of key technologies, patent applications, and academic publications.
    Additionally, with high-fidelity, intelligent ray-tracing and digital twin simulation platforms for wireless communication systems, we offer comprehensive supports for optimizations of commercial wireless networks, such as parameter optimization, root cause identification, and solutions customization.
